Syracuse defenseman Shelby Calof won College Hockey America’s Defenseman of the Week honors for her play in the Orange’s 4-1 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday. This is the second time this year that Calof has earned Defenseman of the Week honors, with the first time being the week of Jan. 3 when SU won the “Battle at the ‘Burgh.”

In the first game last Friday, the Orange were handed their worst loss since 2018 when they lost 9-0 to the Lakers. Still, the second game of the series gave SU another chance to clinch the CHA’s top seed with a win.

The Orange were already ahead 3-1 in the final period before Calof helped seal the victory by assisting their empty-net goal. Calof fired a pass to Abby Moloughney, who then sent the puck to Victoria Klimek who scored the goal. This was Calof’s eighth assist of the season, which is the second-most among Syracuse defensemen behind Jessica DiGirolamo with 10.

Calof also finished with a block in the Lakers series. She is third among SU defensemen with 35 blocks, trailing only DiGirolamo (65) and Hannah Johnson (43).
