Yogurtland to replace Brickstone Eatery
Starting this fall, Syracuse University students will have not one but two new frozen yogurt options to choose from near campus.
Yogurtland, a Fullerton, Calif.-based chain, will replace the now-defunct Brickstone Eatery on 147 Marshall St. Another frozen yogurt chain, Yogurt Crazy had previously announced that it would be moving into Pita El Saha’s former location on 137 Marshall Street.
Yogurtland will open Aug. 15 and will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., said local co-owners Josh Weinstein and Brett Kinsler in an email.
“The store is sleek and colorful and the experience itself is fun and interactive because guests can come in and choose whatever flavors and toppings they wish to create their own frozen yogurt treat,” Weinstein said.
The company confirmed the existence of a location near SU Tuesday in a tweet to the university’s official Twitter account, @SyracuseU.
The store features a rotating menu of more than 50 flavors of classic and exotic yogurt such as vanilla, chocolate, green tea and guava pineapple, as well as 35 different toppings.
The flavors are gluten-free and all meet the National Yogurt Association’s criteria for “live and active culture frozen yogurt.” Several non-fat and sugar-free options are available as well.
Weinstein and Kinsler decided to open a franchise in Syracuse because of the university, though it wasn’t the only reason.
“The university makes this an ideal location for us, but the city of Syracuse itself was a huge draw,” Weinstein said. “It’s a great community that’s very family-oriented.”
The announcement that Yogurt Crazy would also be opening a location nearby did not deter the Yogurtland co-owners. After all, they noted, “there are competitors in every industry and that’s part of running a business.”
Yogurtland currently operates 190 locations in the United States, Mexico and Guam but hopes to expand to 1,000 total locations by the end of 2017, including 88 locations in the New York City area, according to a company fact sheet.
