Dunlap receives a promotion and elects to stay at Syracuse

fter a week of uncertainty, Syracuse assistant football coach Steve Dunlap decided to stay with the Orangemen.

Dunlap, who served as the linebackers coach at SU in 2001, interviewed to be the defensive coordinator at Clemson on Jan. 16., and was expected to take the job. Instead, he will stay at Syracuse next year and inherit a more prestigious title.

Dunlap with be an assistant head coach for the Orangemen, and will partake in more administrative duties.

The 2001 season was Dunlap’s first at SU. He previously spent 17 years at West Virginia, including 13 as defensive coordinator.

Scheduling mess

East Carolina, who was scheduled to play Syracuse at the Carrier Dome during the 2002 season, says it will not be able to play SU because of an expanded Conference USA schedule.

Syracuse consented to the request but has struggled to find a replacement team willing to come to the Dome next season with no return game promised. If SU cannot find another team, it will play just five at the Dome next season.

The Big East hopes to finalize football schedules within a week, giving Syracuse limited time to find a sixth home opponent.
