SU Professor Eric Kingson, one of two Democratic candidates for Congress in New York's 24th district, raised $101,301 in the third quarter of 2015.

Two of the three candidates for Congress in New York’s 24th Congressional District, of which Syracuse is a part, have released their third quarter fundraising results.

Rep. John Katko (R-Syracuse) raised $257,448.89 in funding in the third quarter, which stretched from July 1 to Sept. 30, according to a release from Katko. Syracuse University Professor Eric Kingson, one of two Democratic candidates, raised $101,301, according to a report filed to the Federal Election Commission. The other Democratic candidate, SU alumna Colleen Deacon, was not required to file a campaign finance report because she had only entered the race earlier this month.

The majority of the funding for Kingson came during the two weeks following his official campaign announcement on Sept. 16 in the Rose Garden of Thornden Park, according to a Kingson statement. Among those donors was former SU chancellor Nancy Cantor, who gave $1,000 to Kingson’s campaign on Sept. 27, according to FEC records. Falk College Dean Diane Lyden Murphy gave $500 to the campaign on Sept. 28.

Kingson’s third quarter net operating expenses were $15,941.88, according to the FEC report. His campaign has $85,247.41 on hand, according to the report.

“I am so grateful for the outpouring of support for my candidacy thus far,” Kingson said in a statement. “Our strong fundraising numbers will enable us to press our message about expanding Social Security, guaranteeing paid family leave and creating an economy in which people can work for a better life right here in Central New York.”

Katko, the incumbent, ended the quarter with $664,307 cash on hand, according to an FEC report.

“Robin (Katko’s wife) and I are so grateful for the strong outpouring of community support that we’ve received,” Katko said in a release. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to provide principled, pragmatic, and independent leadership for our community. I’ll continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address the issues that are most important to NY-24.”

A September poll by the National Republican Congressional Committee said Katko leads Kingson, 51 percent to 23 percent, in the race.

The fourth quarter goes until Dec. 31 with a filing deadline of Jan. 31, 2016.
