Vera Hekkenberg named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Syracuse goaltender Vera Hekkenberg has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Hekkenberg, a freshman from Naarden, Netherlands, earned her first career win on Sunday against Lafayette.
The contest ended in a 2-1 victory for SU, with Hekkenberg making a career-best six saves. Hekkenberg made four of her six saves in the fourth quarter, as the Orange fought five penalty corners in three minutes.
Her performance versus the Leopards was Hekkenberg’s second of the weekend following Friday’s win over Northeastern. Hekkenberg has been playing each second half with Louise Pert as the starter.
Over the week, Hekkenberg finished with a .857% save percentage, allowing just one goal and a goals-against average of 1.00. Throughout the season, Hekkenberg has played 147 minutes, with only two goals allowed, 18 shots faced and a save percentage of .778.
