Thirteen seconds after Syracuse received a red card, freshman Petter Stangeland scored to give the Orange the lead with less than a minute remaining.

SU found itself in a similar situation as it did Friday night, with the clock moving quickly toward the 90th minute. Though down a defender, Stangeland’s late goal avoided overtime and handed No. 8 Syracuse (2-0) its second straight win, downing Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, 2-1. SU will return to SU Soccer Stadium for its home opener Friday against Princeton.

Unlike its first game, the Orange did not play catch-up. A 40-yard strike from sophomore Johannes Pieles sailed over goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo and into the back of the net. Over 30 minutes later, Lachlan McLean knotted the game at one apiece.

Over the next 42 minutes, SU received three yellow cards and a red card. The Orange struggled to put a shot on goal, totaling only three on nine shots. Friday against Saint Louis, the Orange finished with eight shots on net, sailing just three wide. Junior goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert stopped three of four SIUE shots on net.

Syracuse has struggled to pull away from both St. Louis and SIUE to start the season. But both times it was a freshman whose late-game heroics gave the Orange the go-ahead goal.
