Ron Thompson will come back from a lower-body injury against Rhode Island. He had a walking boot on during training camp.

Junior defensive end Ron Thompson will be ready to play against Rhode Island, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said in a teleconference on Tuesday.

Thompson wore a walking boot on his left foot during training camp and was out of it for the first time on Aug. 25. He is listed as one of two starting defensive ends on the two-deep depth chart Syracuse released on Saturday.

“(Thompson’s) ready to go,” Shafer said. “We’ll want to use him in different situations.”

Shafer had said on Aug. 14 that Thompson, who recored 32 total tackles and led SU’s defensive line with three sacks last season, would be out for a couple weeks.

The Orange lost three starters on the defensive line to graduation, Micah Robinson, Eric Crume and Robert Welsh.

Thompson and senior defensive tackle John Raymon are the only defensive linemen listed on the two-deep depth chart with significant playing experience.

Four of the eight defensive linemen listed on the depth chart are freshmen or redshirt freshmen, including defensive end Qaadir Sheppard, nose tackles Kayton Samuels and Steven Clark and defensive tackle Chris Slayton.
