Orange falls in final preseason tune-up

Joe Walters could have single-handedly taken on the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team. And, despite being grossly outnumbered, he almost took the Orange out. Walters scored 10 points (six goals, four assists) in SU’s 14-7 loss in a scrimmage at Maryland on Saturday.

Syracuse opens its season on Saturday against Army at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

SU’s Steven Brooks led the No. 2 Orange with three goals. Goalie Jay Pfeifer recorded 10 saves. The No. 4 Terrapins outshot SU, 44-31, including 17-3 in the second half.

Swimming & Diving

Sophomore swimmer Luk Boral qualified for the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship by winning the Big East Conference Championship in the 200-yard breaststroke in East Meadow. In the process, Boral broke his own Big East record with a time of 1:58.75.

The Orange men finished sixth out of eight teams at the Big East meet. The women finished sixth out of nine teams.

Freshman Katie Maaske earned a silver medal in the 200-yard breaststroke and junior Rob Persico won bronze in the 200-yard backstroke.

Softball

A week after its best win in school history over No. 3 UCLA, the Syracuse softball team proved it wasn’t a fluke. The Orange won the Sunshine State Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. It finished 3-2 in tournament play, but won three straight games to take the title. SU beat South Carolina yesterday, 10-3, in the championship game.

Junior Alexis Switenko batted in five runs against South Carolina, a Syracuse single-game record.
