Freeney, and maybe his draft status, suffer from ankle injury

After an injury plagued career, Dwight Freeney thought he finally escaped a season healthy. Instead, he suffered an injury Tuesday before one of the most important games of his career.

Freeney sprained his ankle during the second day of practice for this week’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., an invite-only game that gives NFL prospects a chance to showcase their talent. During Monday’s practice before several NFL scouts Freeney impressed with his speed and ability to rush the passer.

Freeney will almost certainly miss practice for the rest of the week and is doubtful for Saturday’s game.

Still, the senior defensive end will be healthy for the NFL Combine on Feb. 28 in Indianapolis. Freeney is one of five Orangemen to be invited to this year’s combine. Willie Ford, PJ Alexander, Quentin Harris and Kyle Johnson will also attend.

The combine invites 286 seniors in addition to select underclassmen who have already declared for the draft.
